Windows 10 Dark Mode Not Applying to File Explorer: Getting Every Window to Go Dark

You switch Windows to dark mode, and Settings, the Start menu, and several apps turn a comfortable charcoal. File Explorer, though, stays bright white. When Windows 10 dark mode not applying to File Explorer leaves one glaring window on the screen, the change feels only slot dewa half done.

Dark mode for File Explorer arrived with the October 2018 Update, version 1809. It depends on the app mode setting, the Windows version, and in some cases on themes and accessibility options that override colours.

Because File Explorer is part of the Windows shell, it also needs a restart before it picks up some colour changes.

Most of the time, one of a handful of settings is responsible, and the fix takes a minute.

What Might Be Causing It

File Explorer ignores dark mode for these reasons:

  • The PC is running a Windows 10 version older than 1809.
  • “Choose your default app mode” is set to Dark, but a High Contrast theme or custom theme is overriding it.
  • File Explorer has not restarted since the setting changed.
  • System files or a third-party theme tool have altered the shell’s appearance.

Older Windows 10 builds simply do not include a dark File Explorer, whatever the setting says.

First Steps to Try

Check the version and the setting.

  1. Press Windows + R, type winver, and press Enter. Version 1809 or later supports a dark File Explorer.
  2. Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
  3. Under “Choose your color,” select Dark, or select Custom and set the default app mode to Dark.
  4. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Windows Explorer, and choose Restart.
  5. Open File Explorer again and check its background.

If the version is older than 1809, installing the latest feature update is the only way to get dark File Explorer windows.

If the Problem Continues

Look for overrides.

  1. Open Settings > Ease of Access > High contrast and make sure High contrast is turned off.
  2. Open Settings > Personalization > Themes and apply the standard “Windows” theme, then set dark mode again.
  3. Uninstall or reset third-party theme and customisation tools, which often patch Explorer’s appearance.
  4. Run sfc /scannow in an administrator Command Prompt to repair shell files.
  5. Sign out and sign back in to apply the changes fully.

Some parts of File Explorer, such as older dialog boxes and the classic Control Panel, remain light even when everything is set correctly. That is a limitation of Windows 10 rather than a fault.

Protect Your Data First

Changing colour settings does not affect your files. Be cautious with tools that replace system files to change the look of Windows, since they can break updates. Create a restore point before using any customisation utility.

The Bottom Line

A bright File Explorer in dark mode usually means an old Windows version, an overriding theme, or Explorer waiting for a restart. Update Windows, set the app mode to Dark, restart Explorer, and remove conflicting themes.
